Raibl is the ancient name of Cave del Predil, an Italian municipality in the Julian Alps near the triple border with Austria and Slovenia. This remote village was part of Austria until 1918.
In this place from 1320 up to 1991 mining activity was very flourishing (zinc and lead were the main extractions); in the period of greatest activity the miners who worked in the Raibl mine were 1200 and the inhabitants about 3000. There was a cinema and a hospital, which disappeared tragically 150 meters underground due to the collapse of some tunnels of the mine in 1910. Numerous residential blocks were erected and there were activities for the entertainment of men after work. It was to all intents and purposes a suburban reality immersed in an impressive alpine landscape, a perfect example of a company town, a city built around its main source of income. During the years more than 120 km of galleries were excavated on 19 levels.
Today the inhabitants are about 300 and this place takes on the aura of the border of the world or post-atomic reality in which a single bar open all year round in the church square is the meeting point for the small community. The big mine is silent, abandoned but always present with its ghostly aspect that reminds us of the past. Today it is a tourist attraction and a museum for the few who venture into these places.

Raibl è l’antico nome di Cave del Predil, un comune italiano nelle Alpi Giulie vicino al triplice confine con Austria e Slovenia. In questo luogo fino ai primi anni ’90 l’attività mineraria è stata floridissima tanto che nel periodo di maggior attività i minatori che lavoravano nella miniera di Raibl erano 1200 e gli abitanti circa 3000. C’era un cinema e un ospedale, sprofondato tragicamente a 150 metri nel sottosuolo per il cedimento di alcune gallerie della miniera nel 1910. Sono stati eretti numerosi caseggiati a più piani simili a grandi casermoni ed erano presenti attività per l’intrattenimento degli uomini nel dopo lavoro. Era a tutti gli effetti una realtà da periferia urbana immersa in un paesaggio alpino, un perfetto esempio di company town, città costruita intorno alla sua principale fonte di reddito. Oggi gli abitanti sono circa 300 e questo luogo assume l’aurea da confine del mondo o realtà post atomica in cui un unico bar aperto tutto l’anno nella piazza della chiesa funge da incrollabile presidio. La grande miniera è silente, dismessa ma sempre presente con il suo aspetto spettrale che ci ricorda il passato. Oggi è un’attrattiva turistica non troppo gettonata per i pochi che si avventurano in questi luoghi.

"Campagna urbanizzata", ossia né campagna, né città; luoghi del lavoro e dell’abitare, costruiti a macchia di leopardo in quello che una volta era un paesaggio rurale uniforme. Questo è per la maggior parte il Veneto oggi. Un Veneto “unito” in una deturpazione rapida del paesaggio, “unito” come gli Stati Uniti d'America da cui dal dopoguerra in avanti ha preso il concetto di sprawl ovvero città diffusa:
un’ urbanizzazione illogica e frammentata caratterizzata da bassa densità e alto consumo di suolo, un territorio in cui l’uso dell’automobile diventa pressoché obbligatorio, come nelle provincie americane. Veneto “United” come il nome di una nota marca di abbigliamento della zona dove i colori, questa volta degli edifici, vengono sbiaditi al primo lavaggio, rendendo impietosa la prova del tempo. I residui della terra del mito dei "schei" e del lavoro.

Hometown Urban Suburbs

The geometries of the urban suburbs in a small Italian city. A city like many others where in the years of the economic miracle it was built in haste to satisfy the needs and desires of the new middle class. Inevitably, everything that was built outside the historical centers has assumed a standardized and impersonal character; all the same residential areas in which the architectural elements are repeated with small simple variations.

Le geometrie della periferia urbana in una piccola città italiana. Una città come tante altre dove negli anni del miracolo economico si è costruito in fretta e furia per soddisfare le esigenze e la voglia di modernità della nuova classe media. Inevitabilmente tutto ciò che veniva edificato al di fuori del centri storici ha assunto un carattere standardizzato ed impersonale; nuclei abitativi tutti uguali in cui gli elementi architettonici si ripetono con piccole semplici variazioni.
